Rediscovering Ancient Traditions for Modern Growth

The Ancient Rites of Passage We Missed: Unlocking Our True Potential

August 09, 20245 min read

"To conquer the world, you must first conquer yourself."

Today there are a lot of gurus talking about personal growth and self improvement, I have watched many trends in this space come and go in my 18+ years of coaching. In my own work however it is the ancient, tried and true gems that have my attention. In this blog post discover the profound impact of ancient traditions, how they shaped civilizations, and what we can learn from them today to unlock our fullest potential.

8 Reasons

DOES ENVIRONMENT REALLY MATTER?

Imagine wanting to grow a tomato plant. If you plant one seed on the beach next to the shoreline, it probably won't grow. Another in a crack in the asphalt in front of your house will likely also fail. But plant the third seed in optimal soil, with the right balance of shade and sunlight, proper watering, and protection from wind and rain, and it will thrive to its full potential. This is akin to the significance of who you surround yourself with and the environments you choose.

What do I mean by Rites Of Passage?

Rites of passage have been integral to human cultures for thousands of years. They exist in every culture and tribe around the world, except in modern Western society. Today, our equivalents are fraternities, the military, sports teams, and gangs, but these fall short of the profound transformations that traditional rites of passage offered.

Consider the movie "300." It depicts intense and brutal rites of passage, symbolic of conquering the inner beast. The demons we face are within us, and as the saying goes, "The man who conquers himself has conquered something much greater than the man who has conquered the world." To conquer the world, you must first conquer yourself.

What I have found in men's work

In many men's groups I've participated in, the same dysfunctional patterns and behaviors from childhood persist. These groups often lack the conscious communication skills necessary for real transformation. They frequently listen to fix or offer one-size-fits-all advice, which is unproductive. That is why in the work I do with my programs for men we focus on a customized approach utilizing the Rites of Passage.

Rites of passage can profoundly shift your perspective, opening up new ways of doing things and achieving results with minimal time, effort, and energy. If you've ever wondered if something is inherently broken within you, you're not alone. Gay Hendricks, in his book "The Big Leap," discusses the upper limit problem—believing that you are fundamentally flawed. This belief can hold you back from achieving success, but it's not your fault. You likely didn't receive the rites of passage, the initiation into manhood, the mentorship, and the models needed to thrive.

But we can change that. Our mission is to help you remember who you are and eliminate the obstacles that have blocked your success. You can become unfuckwithable, embracing all aspects of yourself and your life. You don't need to hustle 24/7 or choose between your desires.

Ancient known Rites of Passage

On an island in the South Pacific, boys undergo intense rites of passage. They build platforms and, as they come of age, must calculate the length of vines, tie them to their feet, and jump headfirst from these platforms. The closer their heads come to the ground without injury, the more revered they become. This practice requires incredible attunement to oneself and nature, far beyond what we consider trust exercises in modern seminars. (See video below)

Another powerful rite involves a dramatic walkabout where the father and son journey together into the wilderness. The father, having built up in the boy's mind terrifying stories about a devilish figure, suddenly vanishes during their journey. When the son least expects it, the father reappears disguised as this fearsome devil, launching a fierce physical attack. The boy, having been warned about this trial, must summon all his courage and strength to fight back with everything he has. The battle is intense, a life-and-death struggle that pushes the boy to his limits. In the end, when the boy triumphs, the father reveals his true identity, congratulating his son and explaining that the devil was never real. This harrowing ordeal teaches the boy that his greatest fears are mere illusions, empowering him and marking his transition into manhood.

I'm on a mission.

Many of us missed out on these formative experiences. Raised by single mothers or absent fathers, we inherited flawed operating systems. However, we're not victims. We can choose to reprogram ourselves and break free from limiting beliefs and patterns. Helping even one person break free is the fuel behind why I do what I do.
