"Every moment of self-hatred and negative self-talk isn't just a thought—it's a saboteur, undermining all you're trying to achieve."
For many of us, especially men between the ages of 40-55, life has thrown us through the wringer. We’ve navigated the ups and downs of careers, relationships, marriage, fatherhood, and maybe even divorce. We’ve been conditioned to be tough, to “man up,” and to bury our feelings. Vulnerability was discouraged, and the inner critic was often mistaken for motivation.
But here’s a truth that took me years to realize: there’s a better way. The path to real strength, resilience, and self-mastery doesn’t come from self-abuse, relentless criticism, or shutting down our emotions. It comes from self-compassion, from treating ourselves with the same kindness we offer those we care about.
The inner critic can be ruthless, especially for men conditioned to measure their worth by productivity, financial success, and stoicism. Negative self-talk and self-criticism often masquerade as a drive for improvement, but in reality, they hold us back, sabotaging our progress and keeping us locked in cycles of self-doubt.
Imagine talking to your kids, your friends, or anyone you care about in the same harsh tone you use with yourself. You’d never do it. You’d offer them encouragement, understanding, and patience. So why do we deprive ourselves of the same compassion?
The voice of self-hatred, whether it shows up as "I’m not good enough," "I’ll never measure up," or "I always mess things up," isn’t motivating you—it’s undermining you. The more we let it control our narrative, the harder it becomes to move forward.
True strength isn’t about burying your feelings or pretending to be invulnerable. Real strength is about facing yourself honestly, recognizing the areas where you need growth, and treating yourself with compassion as you work through them. Vulnerability isn’t a weakness; it’s a tool for transformation.
When you approach yourself with kindness, you give yourself the space to grow, to learn, and to recover from mistakes without carrying the weight of shame. Self-compassion builds resilience, because it allows you to acknowledge your humanity rather than striving for an impossible ideal.
I found a way to silence that inner critic, to shift self-hatred into something constructive. It wasn’t an overnight fix, but it was a gradual path forward—one that’s helped me break free from the cycle of self-abuse. Here’s how you can begin to turn the tide:
Observe Your Self-Talk: Pay attention to the words you use when speaking to yourself. Notice the tone, the phrases, and the patterns of self-criticism. Awareness is the first step to changing the narrative.
Challenge Negative Thoughts: When you catch yourself engaging in negative self-talk, challenge it. Ask yourself if this thought is really true, or if it’s just a pattern you’ve developed over the years.
Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness you’d show to a friend. Remind yourself that mistakes and missteps are part of being human. Self-compassion isn’t about making excuses; it’s about offering yourself grace as you grow.
Develop Constructive Inner Dialogue: Replace the harsh, critical voice with one that’s supportive and constructive. Instead of “I can’t do anything right,” try, “I’m learning, and I’ll keep improving.”
Stay Consistent: This isn’t a quick fix. It requires daily practice and consistency. Self-compassion is like a muscle—the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
As you practice self-compassion, you’ll notice an increase in your resilience. Life’s challenges, the ups and downs of relationships, work stress, and family responsibilities don’t magically go away, but you become stronger, more equipped to handle them. You approach life with a calm, grounded presence instead of being in constant battle with yourself.
This self-compassion doesn’t just make you feel better—it changes the way you engage with others. As you soften your inner dialogue, you find yourself better able to handle difficult conversations, to navigate the ups and downs of relationships, and to lead your children by example. Your strength becomes an inner, unshakable resilience rather than a facade of toughness.
To my fellow men who are navigating life’s second act, I see you. I see the challenges, the internal battles, and the pressures that weigh heavily on you. It’s time to turn the page, to let go of the harsh inner critic, and to treat yourself with the same kindness, patience, and understanding that you offer others.
Remember, every moment of self-kindness is a step toward becoming the man you’re trying to be. Stop undermining yourself. Start rebuilding from a foundation of self-compassion, and watch how this shift transforms your life.

"I feel an openness, a willingness to receive , and a call to soften. I felt the love in my chest expanding outwards into ever fiber, every cell. I feel a rawness as this is a place that I don't feel I've fully felt or been able or free to express. I feel a sense of excitement, joy, ecstasy, and bliss. I feel love opening and it's juiciness." -Shawnalee

“Through working with Christopher John Stubbs on the call this past week. The guilt. The absolute control. The financial control. The revenge. The imprints of never being allowed to be my true self. That began unraveling this week and my former partner felt the shift in me.
The trauma tried to reassert itself through the aggression and blaming and "you owe me" rant and "you're not good enough" and "it's all your fault." Wounded Abuser Energy.
Christopher is able to penetrate my darkest hallways and illuminate and illustrate how to clean it up and be free in the light.
Deeply thankful to Christopher for offering last week’s call.” -Gayla D’Gaia
